A Quick Weekend: Mexico City
A mystical museum, a treasure-filled flea market, and the cultural power of Lucha Libre
Mexico City is long past “having a moment;” it’s full-on flourishing. Did you know there are more museums even than Paris? After a few return trips (we can’t get enough!), we’re currently compiling a definitive In Hand design/culture/craft guide, but in the meantime, we wanted to offer a preview. You’ve likely heard of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera's House Studio Museum, Chapultepec Castle, and the National Museum of Anthropology. They are incredible and belong on every must-visit list. But here, we offer three of our favorites—possibly unexpected, but no less deserving—for a wide-ranging intro to the city’s mystic energy, exuberant market culture, and vibrant spectacle of entertainment. Spoiler: Two of the three are very much outside a museum setting.
MUSEUM: Anahuacalli Museum of Pre-Columbian art, Coyoacán
Just four miles from Diego Rivera’s art studio in Coyoacán lies the building that was his true labor of love: the Diego Rivera Anahuacalli Museum. A life-long collector of pre-Columbian artifacts, the museum, on a piece of farmland specifically earmarked by Diego and Frida, houses 2,000 pieces handpicked by Rivera from his collection of over 40,000.
